James L. Egbert

A Life of Living Human Change

James L. Egbert

Founder, Living Human Change

For more than forty years, I worked where change was not optional.

My professional life has taken me from senior enlisted leadership in the United States Air Force to organizational development and human-capital work in the private sector and ultimately to senior organizational and human-capital leadership within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Across those settings, I worked with people and organizations navigating change, uncertainty, competing demands, new possibilities, and the continuing work of becoming something not yet fully known.

Over time, I came to recognize an important distinction.

Organizations experience change through things that can be named and reported—a restructuring, a new leader, a strategy, a new technology, a workforce decision, a reorganization, a beginning, or an ending.

But human beings are simultaneously living change.

They are interpreting, remembering, questioning, adapting, relating, imagining, hoping, grieving, participating, and becoming within what is happening.

That recognition became foundational to Living Human Change.

Today, my work begins with a simple conviction:

Human change is not something we manage. It is something we learn to recognize, participate in, and live.

Living Human Change

Living Human Change is an evolving body of thought and practice concerned with human becoming—in ourselves, our relationships, our organizations, our communities, and the larger fields of change in which we live.

It asks us to attend not only to what has changed, but also to what is changing in and among human beings while life continues to unfold.

Hope is central to this work—not as optimism or a promise that circumstances will turn out as we wish, but as an orientation within becoming.

Participation matters because human beings are not merely observers of change. We live within it, respond to it, and participate in what becomes possible next.

And dignity matters because no human being should be reduced to a role, category, problem, data point, present condition, or organizational utility.

From Living Human Change to Lock Point

My organizational work has also led to the development of Collective Intelligence Lock Point—a professionally facilitated, 90-minute dialogue around one consequential organizational or team question.

The idea comes from the navigation lock.

Sometimes boats and ships traveling rivers, lakes, or connected waterways cannot simply continue forward. The water ahead may be at a different elevation. They must temporarily stop their forward progress and enter a protected chamber where another kind of movement becomes possible.

Organizations and teams can reach points like this too.

Lock Point creates a protected conversational chamber where people occupying different organizational positions can encounter one consequential question together without a predetermined answer, required consensus, or pressure to produce an immediate action plan.

My role is deliberately limited:

I do not move the organization. I operate the lock.

The lock makes movement possible.

The organization makes the journey.

My Work

My work today includes writing, speaking, facilitation, and continuing development of Living Human Change.

It explores the intersections among:

  • Living Human Change and Reported Event Change
  • Hope and Human Becoming
  • Collective Intelligence and Organizational Life
  • Leadership and Organizational Change
  • Dignity and Human Participation
  • Personal Growth and Life Transitions
  • Community and Civic Life

I am also the author of the Hope²Change five-volume series, an evolving exploration of hope, participation, human becoming, and Living Human Change. Volume I is published and available on Amazon, Volume II is scheduled for release in September 2026, and Volumes III–V are in development.

Hope²Change is the body of writing from which much of the thinking that became Living Human Change first emerged.

Professional Background

I retired from federal service in 2026 after 43 years of public service spanning the United States Air Force and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

My work has included organizational development, strategic workforce planning, human-capital strategy, leadership development, organizational performance, facilitation, instructional systems design, and large-scale organizational change.

My participation in organizational and community life continues through service on the Church Council of Zion Lutheran Church of the City of Baltimore and the Board of the City Center Residents Association. These settings keep me actively engaged in the everyday work of leadership, community, participation, and change at a different scale and in different forms.

Different organizations. Different roles. Different moments in time.

But a question running through much of the journey has become increasingly clear:

What is happening to and among the human beings while the reported change is happening?

Living Human Change continues to grow from that question.

An Invitation

Living Human Change is not simply something I want to explain.

It is something I hope people will recognize in their own lives, organizations, relationships, and communities.

An invitation to notice more carefully.

To remain present to what is actually happening.

To recognize the dignity of the people living within change.

To participate where participation is ours.

And to remain open to what is not yet fully known.

We are already living human change.
